Posada is one of the most evocative places on eastern Sardinia: a medieval village perched on a limestone hill, dominated by the imposing Castle of Fava, surrounded by award-winning beaches and unspoiled nature.

History

Posada’s origins go back to Phoenician times, when a settlement called Feronia stood here. Some historians suggest an Italic-Etruscan presence as early as the 5th–4th century BC, evidenced by the discovery of a small Hercules statuette.

In Roman times the area was known as portus Liquidonis, corresponding to modern-day San Giovanni di Posada. In 1095 Pope Urban II officially recognised the village, which over the following centuries became a contested border point between the giudicati of Gallura and Arborea.

The Legend

The castle’s name is tied to a 14th-century story: during a long Saracen siege, the inhabitants — running low on supplies — came up with an ingenious plan. They captured a wounded pigeon, fed it fava beans for days, then let it fly toward the enemy camp. The besiegers, seeing the well-fed bird, believed the town still had abundant food reserves and lifted the siege. From that day on, the fortress was named the Castle of Fava (Castello della Fava).

The Historic Centre

The medieval village unfolds at the foot of the castle, with a labyrinth of narrow alleys, staircases, and stone arches that preserve an atmosphere unchanged for centuries. Key landmarks:

  • Castle of Fava — A quadrangular tower built on the hilltop. From the summit there are breathtaking views over the Rio Posada valley, the San Giovanni sea and Mount Montalbo.
  • Church of Sant’Antonio Abate — Originally built in 1324 and rebuilt in the 17th century, it is the main place of worship in the village.
